A REFLECTION OF 2011....WHY I FEEL BLESSED AND CONTINUE TO PAY IT FORWARD!

As 2011 came to an end for me flying thur the air on my way home from MY little home I call paradise- Puerto Vallarta Mexico! My family and I celebrated our 9th holiday season in Puerto Vallarta. How blessed we are to be able to visit a place we have all come to love and a place that will forever be a cherished paradise in each of our hearts. Not only for the tropical beauty of Mexico and how we love getting away to the beach, sun and fun during our early winter season back home, but because of one thing-the family we have become a part of and are only fortunate to see once a year. Along with the local families and friends we have befriended who live in PV, but the families who come from Canada to New York and every where in between. We all meet on the best beach in PV (right where that circle of lounge chairs and the blue blanket sits in one of the following pictures). This continues to be our meeting place every morning and our ending place every year as we say goodbye to one another and bless each other with the best of the New Year. We love to join and celebrate with our dear friends who play Santa to the local children in PV on Christmas Day. How good it feels to give to another who only know you as a tourist stranger. But seeing the smile on those children's faces is all that matters.
What a year 2011 was for me! From last January where I had the opportunity to do a contestant in the Miss America pageant, to taking my daughter to see Lady Gaga. Having the chance to work on not one but four episodes of My Fair Wedding with David Tutera. Getting a strong business base going in the Los Angeles area and meeting a very good friend and mentor Tara Fontana and working for her. Having numerous brides during the year and some that are most memorable. Having my first bride/wedding at Disneyland. Attending celebrity events where I have met some very recognizable entertainers. Doing makeup and hair for Preston Powas's first music video, the cover for Franklin Covery Magazine and Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition which will air this early summer. Meeting and working with Rebecca Wall (she was the one who testified against Warren Jeffs), hearing the strength of this woman and entering her sphere of life as now a friend is a blessing all its self (look for my work with her later this year). Taking my kids and MIL to my favorite city in the world 'NEW YORK' for my daughters 16th birthday are just a few of my highlights of 2011.
In all it was a jet-set year, it felt like I was on a plane every other week! But 2011 was very good to me and I can only hope I have given back as much as I received. My family, friends and clients mean the very most to me. I can not express the gratitude and love I have for each and everyone of you. My fondest memory will be the loss of our family dog-Bandit, he is missed more and more every day. I will close here as the tears continue to fall thinking about our beloved beautiful boy Bandit.

What is there to say about part 3 but BEAUTIFUL! To me this session turned out most romantic out of all three themes. Perhaps it was the lighting that sets the tone more for me, not to mention two gorgeous models. I love the entire feel this theme portrays. When the thought of a Boho theme was mentioned I was very excited because braids are so popular currently. So to incorporate a fishtail braid in the models look was cool. The flowers are most amazing as there are no flowers in this shoot, her bouquet are all made out of plants! That was so unique and another very cool idea!!! The holidays are here and as always this time of year reminds me of the many blessings and the amazing support I have been given by family, friends and my wonderful clients. So I've been inspired to give back by this wonderful idea I came across on my nightly web searching. I wanted to let everyone know about a little thing I'm doing this holiday season, to give back to our community.It's called "Cans for Comments". The site has challenged bloggers to donate cans to their local food bank for every comment left on our blogs. As any blogger knows it a great feeling to get comments on your posts. So from November 1- November 18, I will be blogging every day (hopefully) and donate one canned good or non-perishable item to a local food shelter for every comment, question or compliment left on my blog.

10 comments = 10 cans of food. It's just that simple. I have LOTS of updates coming, so you’ll have plenty to comment on too! You can even comment on past posts, so go back and leave some love on your favorite session or personal post. Heck, you can go back and comment on them all if you want. I am envisioning a giant canned food pyramid, so let’s do this people and please help me give back some love! As I am winding down the year 2011, Carrie Purser Makeup and Hair Artistry will be giving away one FREE 60-90 min, one-on-one hair and/or makeup education session during November and December. And what is an education session, you may ask? Well, friends, it is where I sit down with two lucky winners and talk about how to make them their best self. It starts with a consultation and follows with instruction on how they can recreate certain looks on themselves. We might talk about product or choosing the right style for their face shape. It could consist of walking them through a blow dry or color options that make them feel new again. Have I mentioned before I much I love doing cultural events, especially weddings! When Karmon had contacted me with interest in my services for her wedding day I could not be more excited. All I can say is her formal pictures are the most amazing pictures I have seen and I could not be more pleased with how her look turned out. Karmon's wedding was top-notch so of course I had to complete her hair and makeup to match the Maggie Sottero Wedding Gown and the Swarovski jewels, plus the custom Chinese dress and traditional Chinese jewelry to match. Jenna was the city girl from Arizona who found her cowboy and did Kolton ever turn this city girl into a cowgirl! What a fun day their wedding was, they went all out and had the funniest western style wedding I have ever seen! The fun all started when I was doing Jenna's hair and makeup very early, but her soon-to-be mother in-law kept us all laughing and the spirits happy. The sign at the end of this picture session pretty much sums up Merrilee's personality, she is a hoot! I've known Joni since she was four months old! I always love when I get the opportunity to see just how far my business is reaching brides outside of my little town. Karmon and Jared what a fun couple, both to-be doctors! I was excited to be a part of this pre wedding union as I love the chance to makeup my couples who are sharing cultural traditions. Karmon will have a traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony along with her Western wedding ceremony. A MOMENT IN LAGUNA

One night as I was attending a function at my home town Country Club I ran into an old photographer friend of mine. During our conversation and his interest in working together we brain stormed a photo shoot in the Laguna Beach area. He has a beautiful home there and had a great concept in mind. So of course I jump on board as I am always interested in building my portfolio. I called upon another friend of mine to get me the talent. So one Friday afternoon we all met in Laguna Beach and began our concept shoot. I have to say this was my first actual time in Laguna and I was taken back by the beauty it offers. Such a cool place. So after a long afternoon of HMUA and shooting we all gathered in the kitchen of my friends home and he and his companion cooked us this wonderful dinner. Far above any duty of anyone especially on a photo shoot. What this wonderful session turned out to be is enjoying the beauty of Laguna, meeting new friends and creating a lasting bond and memory that will forever be remembered, which turned us all into life long friends.

Kirsten and Mark...what a fun couple! Kirsten had found me through her cousin as she (Alexis) was one of my very first brides. When I first met Kirsten she said she always wanted to have her wedding in Hawaii, but instead of taking all her money there she chose me (lucky me) and they will be having their honeymoon in Hawaii. I feel so fortunate to get the best brides, like many Kirsten came with total faith and confidence in me as she wanted the entire package (hair color, hair cut and hair and makeup artistry for everything). Yes, I love these type of brides :)
When she told Mark he has to get his airbrush makeup done too, (of course he was a bit resistant). Now as the proof is in the pictures of how evenly there flawless faces match one another and he actually liked the airbrush makeup.
I cant wait for this beautiful brides bridal pictures, she is strikingly beautiful and I love to make those beautiful blue eyes of hers pop!

I first meet Kodi a year ago, she had just returned from serving charity work in Africa and contacted me with interest in hair and makeup as she was now competing in the MCV pageant. I know impressive already,

So a year later she contacts me again and tells me she is now getting married and wanted my services for her special day! I was so tickled to hear where life had taken Kodi over the year and could not have been more honored to be sharing this moment with her. We schedule her consultation and of course she brings her dad with her again. This is what I admired the most about Kodi is the relationship she and her father share, it is truly something special. Staci had contacted me while I was on vacation is Scottsdale. She said she needed the works and her wedding was a month away. In Honor of Mothers Day...Ms. Sandie

Sandie had this wonderful idea that she wanted to give her three daughters pictures of her as a gift. She had been on the quest of changing her life and after months of dedication and several pounds and inches shed. She was ready to show off her new self with a new makeover as well. How fun it was to listen to her journey and what transpired this new personal growth in her. I can only hope her daughters find the value and love that their mother had dedicated not only to herself but to the angels in her life. I was touched by this story and thought is was so fitting as we approach Mother's Day this Sunday. Over this last weekend I spent the day working in the salon. Not very often do you find me in the salon on weekends as they are usually with a new bride, family or out of town. Anyway, that day there happened to be a new lady working and I was surprised to see a new staff member. My first impression was "she doesn't fit the image of a stylist" so I was even more curious. After getting the time and opportunity to converse with this woman, I was so taken back by what her presences in the salon that day was for. She shared with me how she got involved and told me that on April 25th she will go 25 hours without speaking (hard job period, but especially being the mother of 6). As my day was ending I thanked her for her presences in the salon and gave her my donation to support her charity. She has been in my mind all weekend and this morning I woke up feeling more blessed to have the opportunity to have my encounter with this woman. It is a true example that rare gifts do come in unique packaging. That day I witnessed humanity at its best, that day I realized you cannot judge a book by its cover. That day was another valuable example and lesson.

A few weeks ago eight wonderful ladies spent an afternoon with me at the Makeup Workshop I had, this was an intro to basic makeup application and knowledge. The guests each received a small makeup kit to use during the hands-on workshop. My model was the cute Miss Utah Teen-World, Lauren Biada. I had a photographer there to help capture the event and from her awesome pictures you can see everyone had a wonderful time. Our selected guests were nominated by their loved ones who found these 3 women to be outstanding, selfless and ladies who have always put themselves last even when their own lives were not the best situations. We could not have been more pleased to spend an entire day giving them a day of pampering and beauty. They enjoyed their makeovers with a pedicure, manicure, facial, cut & color, waxing and airbrush makeup. Then had a professional photo taken to remind them of the beauty we filled them with and to capture for a lifetime. Cancun Mexico and over my birthday??? Why would one second guess the opportunity right? Well this bride wasn't just a bride who found me and hired me. This bride was a very special bride to me, this wedding was as close to experiencing my own daughter getting married. This bride is like my own daughter. I have known Amber since the day this beautiful girl was born and when the time came she announced she was getting married I was one huge ball of emotions, (even though we had a year to get ready, emotionally) it still never made it any easier. I could not have been more honored to have been with Amber on her special day in the way I was and it was not hard to capture the true beauty of Amber, but wow was she ever an incredibly beautiful bride! Her destination wedding was all she could have dreamed of and making her radiate the way she did was all I could have asked for. I have had Carrie Purser's ATrac hair extensions since March 2010, so almost one year. I have absolutely loved them. I have tried multiple kinds in the past, and the others just don't compare. The hair itself feels just as soft and shiny as the day I got them. (Which has saved a fortune). And also my own hair has stayed in great shape and is damage free, as compared to the other methods that are just too hard on the hair and cause breakage, thinning and even bald spots! Kelly's before/after pictures during her touch up session. She came in for her touch up so I hurried and took some pictures with her hair all done. Then after the 10 MINUTES it took to remove the ATracs to begin her touch up, I took some before pictures. You can see Kelly has longer hair, it is just short on the sides and thin. Her objective with the extensions is to add some length and density to her natural hair. Then it took only ONE hour to put the hair extensions back in and Kelly was back to having her gorgeous, full long hair.

I have had hair extensions for almost 3 years now and I hated them. They were so hard on my hair and hard to take care of, and I always had to buy new hair, which got extremely expensive. The only reason I kept getting them done was because if i took them out, I hated the way I looked cause my hair was so thin. They literally ruined my hair!! MY TIME AT MISS AMERICA 2011...

My time and experience at Miss America 2011 in Las Vegas was something I will never forget. I did not know exactly what to expect going into this opportunity, and what I got out of it was far more than one could hope for. I had met Krystal back in July 2010 at a national pageant in New Hampshire. We had spoke briefly over my clients who had won most in their categories. I never guessed from that encounter it would be taking me to Miss America 2011 as her personal hair and makeup artist. When it was time to work I went giving 110% of my dedication and artistry, I was in Vegas and was not allowing the odds to be against me. As I entered the Makeup/ Hair room I instantly walked into NETWORK OPPORTUNITY! At first, I kinda thought 'what I was experiencing' was as close to reality TV as I could imagine. After a long week of sharing that room with sooo many talented and amazing artist, I returned home with having more gratitude fill my heart and feeling so blessed to have met so many wonderful mentors who I now call dear friends. I can’t say enough about Carrie Purser and her amazing talents! This past July was one of the biggest days of my life…..my wedding of course! Luckily I was introduced to Carrie, and she was able to make my day magical! After our consultation, I knew she was the one. I had no worries after that, and had complete confidence in her. When I went for my trial, I didn’t really have any hair ideas in mind. My hair is long and extremely thick. Most of the time it is unmanageable and thrown into a ponytail. Indian Summer Dream...
I had the great opportunity to do this fun project with the very talented Kellee Smith of Moments By Kellee Photography. Over the last few months we had been brainstorming to come up with our theme and when Native American was brought up, nothing else mattered and I can not tell you how thrilled I am this is what became of our first theme and concept shoot. This project is extra special to me because I had the wonderful opportunity to work with my son, who's creative skills can leave one with great amazement! I can not be more proud!! Also, to work with a young lady who I have watched grow up from a four month old baby to one very beautiful woman, and did our models ever kill it! The Extension Question...another informative read.

About a quarter of my clients either have extensions or want extensions. If your considering getting them, know that there are several options available to you. Most women fantasize about long, thick, flowing hair and why shouldn't they? Here's the low-down on the locks you crave.

To understand the different methods of applying the hair, we first need to know what kind of hair can be put in. In general, there's two different kinds of hair used: Weft and Individual. Also choosing the right denisty of hair to closely matching your natural hair is extremely important.

A weft (or track) is a sheet of hair all bonded together at the top. It's can be used in sewing, beaded, clip-in, or glued methods.

Individual hair is hair bundles that have been gathered in individual strands and bonded together into an I shape at the top. This is used for beaded or fusion methods.

You typically will only see the weft hair being used, because the time and cost involved with individuals is somethings most women don't want to commit to. So, for all intents and purposes, we are going to talk about the weft.
Clip In Extensions:

These are the best idea if you only want them for one day but think you could use them again in the future. Easy in, easy out, add fullness, and not to hard on the wallet. You can find these just about anywhere, but make sure you get real hair! If it's synthetic, you can kiss curling it good-bye.

Beaded on Weft: Not really a technical term, it's just the method.
These are a personal favorite. They take about an hour to put in, blend well, and are easy on the hair. A weft of hair is clipped to the roots, then individual beads are threaded onto both the weft hair and the clients hair, then the metal bead is clamped down to secure the two together. They last about two weeks before a touch up is needed, and can last more than a month if they are maintained properly.

Sewn in Weft: Hair is braided in horizontal rows, then a needle and thread is used to sew the weft onto the braid. The original and still most common use of weft hair.
Bonded/Glued Weft:
The hair is sectioned off and the weft is glued in panels. A quick way to get extensions in, but not the most popular. Very temporary, but not as temporary as clip-ins.

So, what extensions are right for you? Depends on what kind of investment you want to make. Think of hair extensions as a very nice accessory! There's a ton of other hair pieces on the market, too. Bang extensions, Bands with tufts of hair, hair on these weird wire comb thingy's... most of that is synthetic. That's cool if you don't need to change the texture of the hair, just make sure you that you are happy with it exactly as it is before you buy it. As for the real hair extensions, those can be colored, curled, flattened, just like your own. Invest wisely in taking the time to look for a certified hair extension specialist, the proper hair to match your natural hair and understanding the proper maintence care.

If I had a nickle for every horror story!

Grown women have cowered and cried over a bad makeup job. I had a model once tell me how her previous artist licked a q-tip and tried to use it on her face! Breakouts, dirty brushes, attitude problems, or just plain ugly makeup jobs can make a girl quiver in fear.

Anytime your using someones services for the first time, it's a crap shoot. The best laid plans of mice and men, as they say. It sucks that we usually learn how bad a company can be first hand, but you can certainly increase your odds of landing a good one if you have a basic idea of what your looking for.

When searching for a makeup artist, first and foremost know that the competition is cutthroat. If you live in a major metro area or even a large state and only find a couple, your looking in the wrong places. You should have at least a half a dozen or so to choose from, but more than likely a lot more!

Testimonials are very effective in finding a great MUA. If other people have good things to say, then chances are you will too. Most websites have policies in effect so that all reviews are verified as legit. Also, it takes effort on our part to get former clients to write those reviews, good bad or otherwise. A MUA with reviews is an MUA who is pretty serious about their careers and makes the effort beyond just showing up to appointments.

Portfolio's can be a big help too. Your looking for a good selection of styles. If all you see is tight, curly updo's and your going to a corporate event, that may not be the artist for you. It's kinda a gyp to the client that Photoshop is so mainstream now, I've seen many a shoddy makeup artist with a great portfolio when it's mostly a graphic design team's work. There's no way to tell this except to look for consistency in the photo's. If only a few are amazing but there rest suck, it probably means that the MUA lucked out and got a good post-production clean up.

Now that you found an artist with great reviews and a smashing portfolio, the follow thru is going to seal the deal. Most of us are our own secretary's. That means, when work is good, we probably aren't going to be able to get back to you immediately. But, you should hear back from an artist within two days of your initial contact. We may be on set all day, but especially if you email us, we can usually write back from our Blackberry's or iPhone. You want an artist who responds in a reasonable time frame, answers your questions, and is friendly. This all confirms the good stuff you've read and the photo's you've seen.

Don't be afraid to have a trial if your unsure about your artist. If it's a big event and you need to be positive about the person your working with, schedule your trial. Yes, it will cost you extra, but it would be worth your peace of mind. Also, you can make sure that the artist LISTENS. One of the biggest complaints I hear about other artists is that they didn't listen to the client. You need someone who can walk the fine line between giving you good, professional advice and still giving you what you want. Sometimes that line can be shaky to tread, but an effort must be made just the same.

There are some truly amazing artists out there, just waiting to be found!

Not only was she very professional at what she does but she made us so comfortable, almost like a friend you've known for years! Carrie was great and I look forward to any other event I could use her help with making me not just look but feel beautiful.

Lisa came to me with the idea of a 'Rock-a-Billy' bride theme, I was sooo excited! When we did her trial we conversed for awhile to get on the same page of what we both believed was rockabilly. After a very exciting consultation we began and I transformed her hair into a total 50's era style and she rocked the hair and makeup. Then when she came for her bridal session she said her finance' wanted her hair more 60's. So here is what I came up with to fancy this couple and Lisa rocked this session for her modern day rock-a-billy bride.
